Edited VS. Unedited Photos
Round 1 - Pro Unedited Photos!
3 reasons why you should be able to take good pictures without editing them:
If you don't care about the quality of the picture because "well, i have photoshop", you won't improve your photographing skills.
If you care more about your picture, you are much more aware of what you do, which mistakes you make and how you could make it better!
If you want to take great, sharp pictures, you have to get to know your camera, get used to it, you have to know how to use its settings. You'll get to know your camera so much better if you try to get the most out of it!
Your photo should look good without photoshop, if you want to be taken seriously as a photographer. Imagine you'd take a picture of someone, they take a look at the camera screen and it looks awful - is over/underexposed, has a bad composition, no decent whitebalance... well, "i know, my photos aren't that good, but don't worry my software will fix that" doesn't sound that professional, right?
An unedited photo shows what you can do with your camera and how good your photographing skills really are
And by the way: if someone prefers not to edit their pictures, though they may not be perfect, it's totally okay. Do whatever you like
Round 2 - Pro Edited Photos!
3 examples where editing is necessary:
when the camera shoots pictures with a bad whitebalance
when your camera doesn't reduce the noise enough
when your camera shoots pictures with a low contrast
Round 3 - Conclusion
All in all: apart from a few cases, editing shouldn't be a necessity.
If you want to try it out anyway, play with the colours, give your photo a special touch - do it!
Nonetheless, you should strive to be able to take good pictures that look already good when they're unedited - if you're a bad photographer, no photoshop can fix your picture.

A Little Food For Thoughts
Where does "editing a photo" end, and where does Digital Art begin?
If you're just making minor corrections, your picture belongs into the photography category.
If you add something, a texture or some fake bokeh or similar, it belongs into the Digital Darkroom category.
If you add other elements, like a bird or whatever, it is a photomanipulation. A photomanipulation should not be uploaded into the "photography" category - especially when you used some photos that aren't yours!
Apart from the DeviantArt gallery categories, it is quite hard to draw a sharp line between Photography and Digital Art.
But that's just my opinion - what is yours?
Do you prefer editing your pictures or not?
